Course Description
Middle school is an exciting and challengin time for sixth graders who are making the transition from childhood to adolescence, discovering their interests, and beginning to establish their identity as unique individuals In this nineweek module, sixth graders will prepare for college and careers by explorin a variety of interests and talents, developin an understanding of current and emerging career possibilities, and identifying how career choice can be a reflection of self. Students will create, share, analyze, and reflect on career biographies in order to expand their career aspirations and connec classroom learning to realworld roles and opportunities.

•Careers vs. Jobs Article and Comparison
•Discussion about the contributions of introverts and extroverts in a group.
•Discussion about what researc is and why it is important to cite sources used in
research
•Work on Research and Project
•Project Presentation
Week 2
•Introductory SIRS reading about the 19 Second reading, focusing on events tha
impacted career opportunities
•Theme discussion: Which theme most influenced the career opportunities of th 1930s?
Week 3
•Introductory SIRS read about the 1940s
•SIRS Intro Second Reading: What Events Helped or H Job Growth?
• Theme discussion: Which theme most influenced the career opportunities of the
1940s?
Week 4
•Examine graphs to explore career shifts in the 20th century
•Introduce the Time Travel Project
Week 5
•Continue to work on project
•Explore the world of work
•Research the MD Career Clusters
•Identify the jobs necessary for a community
•Study the Maryland Regions
Week 6
•Learn how to create a pie chart
•Create a pie chart for assigned Maryland Region
•Discuss and vote on th validity and quality of community pie charts
Week 7
• Present research
• Write reflections regarding career choice research and its impact on the Howard
County community.
